We experience excellent fishing throughout the year,
here is an overview of what we catch and when.
January – February
During these months, also December, we often have to play the weather. Wintertime fishing can be challenging but it is possible to catch nearly anything that swims out there. Also, a good chance to catch the Big Bluefin Tuna, as well as yellowfins and blackfins.
There has been a Blue Marlin caught out of Hatteras in every calendar month, anything is possible in the winter!
March – April
In early spring, Yellowfin Tuna take center stage. These are great fighting fish with often multiple hookups. It is not unusual to hook one on every line, quickly catching a limit of fish! They’re also great to eat. The yellowfins can be mixed in with blackfin tunas as well as dolphin and wahoo possibility!
May
Marlin and dolphin begin to show up in May as the water temperatures start to rise. The fishing in May largely depends upon the water temps. If the temperatures stay cool the yellowfins stay around longer but when the temps begin to rise the Marlins and Dolphin begin to appear.
June – July
June and July are big months for Dolphin, Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, and Yellowfin Tuna.
August
August means pretty weather and good fishing. This is the time of year when the weather is usually the most settled and offers a good chance to get a really pretty day for your fishing. As for the fish, plenty of dolphin with tuna, wahoo and billfish to boot!
Often during August and September we relocate the Bite Me to fish out of Oregon Inlet to fish the awesome billfish bite that traditionally happens that time of year. White Marlin (double digits common) Big Blue Marlin and Sailfish. Late August and Early September check with Captain Jay to determine where the bite me is tied up. We will do our best to put you on the fish as always!
September – October
As the weather starts to cool a bit, the fishing starts to heat up, continued fishing for dolphin, wahoo, tunas and billfish with an early shot at some King Macs on the live bait. This is probably our best Wahoo fishing also, one of our most tasty fish out there and my favorite sashimi!
October – November – December
Hatteras in the fall means Excellent Fishing. We usually get a pretty good fall tuna bite of Yellowfins and BlackFins. We have Live Bait King Mackerel action on light tackle, a spectacular fishery. Fall is a very good time for Meat fishing!
Be sure to check the fishing report to find out what’s going on right now!
